Jack Ma is seen in Mallorca on unusual trip abroad after clash with Chinese regulators

Alibaba Group founder Jack Ma was on the Spanish island of Mallorca, where his luxury yacht is anchored, two Spanish newspapers said, on his first trip abroad since he took on Chinese regulators in 2020.

The Chinese billionaire has been seen little in public since he publicly criticized China’s regulatory system in a speech last year. His empire soon came under intense scrutiny from regulators, even leading to the suspension of the successful $ 37 billion Ant Group IPO.

El Diario de Mallorca said Ma was seen on Tuesday in the port of Andratx buying home decorations at a local store.

The superyacht Zen has been moving along the northwest coast of Mallorca for the last few days and was in Andratx on Tuesday.

On Wednesday he dropped anchor near the coastal city of Santa Ponsa, but a Reuters cameraman could only see smaller support boats returning empty to the superyacht from shore, seeing Ma nowhere to be found.

Without citing sources, El País said that Ma had been visiting the Balearic Islands since Saturday, accompanied by several Chinese businessmen and his security team.

The elegant five-deck motor yacht with a vertical bow, measuring 88 meters, can accommodate up to 16 guests and a crew of 25, according to the Superyacht Times edition. It was built in the Netherlands and delivered in April.

Hong Kong’s South China Morning Post, which is owned by Alibaba, reported on Tuesday that Ma was in Spain for a study tour on agriculture and technology related to environmental issues after spending “private time” with his family in Hong Kong.
