Numbers of daily COVID-19 infections in Brazil returned to their worst moment

In the last 24 hours, 74,134 new infections were detected, the average number of infections per day returned to the levels of June 2021.

Brazil, one of the countries hardest hit by the pandemic in the world, registered 74,134 new COVID-19 infections in the last 24 hours, with which the average number of infections per day returned to the levels of June 2021, when the country experienced one of the worst moments of the health crisis.

According to data released this Monday by the National Council of Health Secretaries (Conass) and driven by the rapid spread of the omicron variant, the average number of infections in Brazil multiplied by 24 in the last 25 days, from 3,090 cases per day on December 23 to 73,728 daily infections this Monday.

The average of this Monday, the largest in almost seven months, practically reached that of June 23 of last year, when Brazil, at the peak of the second wave of the pandemic, registered a weekly record average of 77,328 infections per day.

In other words, the rapid spread of the omicron, a more contagious variant that is already predominant in the country, with more than 90% of new cases, meant that in less than a month the country lost all direction in mitigating the disease. pandemic that it had achieved in six months thanks to the progress of the vaccination campaign.

According to the bulletin released this Monday by Conass, Brazil registered 121 deaths and 74,134 cases of coronavirus in the last 24 hours, bringing the total number of victims to 621,166 and the number of infections to 23,074,791 since the start of the pandemic, in February. of 2020.

These accumulated figures confirm Brazil as the second country in number of deaths from covid in the world after the United States and as the third in number of infections after the North American nation and India.

The number of deaths has also grown in recent days, driven by the rapid spread of the omicron, but to a lesser extent.

The average number of victims this Monday stood at 154 daily, with a growth of 22.2% compared to a week ago (126 deaths per day on January 10) and 60.4% compared to two weeks ago (96 deaths per day on January 3).

The average number of deaths from covid in Brazil today is the highest since that registered on December 13 last (162 deaths per day).

Before the arrival of the omicron, Brazil had managed to reduce the number of deaths and cases from covid to its minimum in 20 months, since last December the figures were almost at the same levels as at the start of the pandemic.

This reduction was attributed to the progress of the vaccination campaign, which allowed that until this Monday about 147.7 million Brazilians, 69.4% of the 213 million inhabitants of the country, have the complete cycle of immunization ( two doses or the single dose vaccine).

Brazil has nearly 70% of its population fully immunized precisely when one year after the first vaccine is commemorated.

The date also coincided with the start of vaccination for children between 5 and 11 years of age, authorized by the health authorities a month ago but which began late due to the resistance of the government of President Jair Bolsonaro, who opposes immunization of minors and has said that he will not allow his daughter to be vaccinated.

That resistance contrasts with the majority opinion of the country. According to a survey released today by the Datafolha institute, almost 80% of Brazilians support childhood vaccination and 58% believe that the head of state is making it difficult. (I)
