The National Police of Peru has confirmed the death of at least two people on the north coast of the country as a result of strong waves caused by the eruption this past Saturday of the Hunga-Tonga-Hunga-Ha’apai volcano.
“We regret the sensitive death of two people, who were found dead by members of the San Martín police station, on Naylamp beach, when the waves were abnormal“, The Police have indicated on their Twitter account.
The deceased have been identified as two women, an aunt and a niece., 46 and 23 years old, respectively, who were traveling in a vehicle that ended up swept away by currents, reports the Peruvian newspaper ‘La República’.
These are the first two fatalities caused by the gigantic eruption of the submarine volcano, epicenter of a wave that spread throughout the Pacific region and generated tsunami alerts and warnings in Australia, New Zealand, Vanuatu, Japan and the United States, among other countries.
Tonga has been the most affected country and, although at the moment there is no information on deaths, the Prime Minister of New Zealand, Jacinda Ardern, has confirmed that the eruption has caused considerable damage to this small kingdom, which is still practically isolated 24 hours after the incident.
