Currently more than 5.5 million people have received the three doses in the country.
The Government of Peru announced this Wednesday that people over 50 years of age must prove from next January 23 that they have received three doses of the covid-19 vaccines in order to enter closed public spaces in the country.
The Minister of Health, Hernando Cevallos, reported that the measure was approved this Wednesday by the Council of Ministers to try to stop the increase in infections of the disease and protect citizens considered most vulnerable.
“In the case of people over 50 years of age, they must present their booster dose, because this pandemic affects the unvaccinated and people with comorbidities. We have to protect this sector, “he said.
Cevallos said that currently more than 5.5 million people have received the three doses in the country, of which 53.3% are older than 60 years and with comorbidities.
The minister indicated that the obligation for those over 18 and under 50 to have two doses to be able to enter closed public places will also be maintained.
In that sense, he stressed that his country is experiencing a great increase in the impact of the epidemic, since it has gone from 26,000 to 81,000 cases detected per week in a short time.
Referring to the national vaccination campaign, he specified that the coverage of the target population, from the age of 12, that has received two doses has increased to 83.7% and that with one dose reaches 88.9%.
“More than 90% of the patients who have died are unvaccinated or had incomplete vaccination. Not getting vaccinated is the sector that is filling the intensive care units ”, he warned.
The Peruvian health authorities are also preparing to present the vaccination protocol that will be used to apply the vaccine to children between 5 and 11 years old in the coming days.
Despite the large increase in cases, the Ministry of Health (Minsa) also confirmed this Wednesday that it has been decided to reduce from 14 to 10 days the isolation period that a person infected with the coronavirus must comply with in Lima and Callao, where it dominates widely the omicron variant.
It was also reported that the Ministry of Strategic Diseases Directorate will be in charge of monitoring the progress of this variant in the rest of the country to determine if this cut in the deadline is also applied in other provinces.
Cevallos said Tuesday that one of the characteristics of the omicron variant is that its period of evolution and recovery is much shorter compared to other variants.
He pointed out, however, that if the progression of infected that already occurs in other countries continues in Peru, problems with basic services and front-line health care personnel will be faced.
In this sense, the Government of Peru approved to include in the level of “high alert” for the epidemic 35 provinces of the country, in addition to Lima and Callao, where the curfew will be maintained from 11:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. : 00 hours the next day, as well as capacity restrictions in public and private places.
Peru is one of the countries most affected by the pandemic, accumulating since the beginning of the health emergency more than 2.4 million confirmed cases and more than 203,000 deaths, which makes it have the highest mortality rate in the world for this disease. (I)
