The consumption of psychoactive substances, natural or synthetic compounds, that act on the nervous system generating alterations in the functions that regulate thoughts, emotions and behavior, a public health problem in Mexico, would increase the probabilities of suffering from visual disability or blindness, said this Wednesday a specialist in Ciudad de Mexico.
“The drugs They cause physical changes in the eyes that go beyond the usual visible signs, such as red eyes or abnormal pupil size, and have a profound and lasting impact on ocular health.”said Gerardo Gleason, an expert in technology for ophthalmological surgeries.
Within the framework of the International Day to Combat Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, which is commemorated every June 26, the specialist warned that, according to the 2023 report of the International Narcotics Control Board (INCB), ) of the United Nations (UN), the use of methamphetamines, ecstasy and other stimulants in Mexico grew by 218% between 2017 and 2022.
He explained that drugs such as cocaine, for example, can cause retinal detachments; while LSD and crack cocaine increase the risk of retinopathy and vision loss. Meanwhile, marijuana causes dry eye and photophobia and opioids can cause decreased pupil size, dry eye, tearing, and the risk of serious eye infections.
In addition, he cited that, according to a study by Indiana University, United States, the use of cocaine and amphetamines is associated “at increased risk of developing open-angle glaucoma”an eye disease would be that can lead to vision loss if not treated properly.
While an analysis led by the University of Oklahoma revealed that early use of psychoactive substances, before age 21, can increase the chances of visual impairment or total vision loss.
“These findings highlight the importance of raising awareness about the ocular risks associated with drug use. Likewise, it is crucial that ophthalmological health professionals are attentive to these problems and constantly update their skills.”Gleason said.
The specialist pointed out that the use of state-of-the-art equipment is essential to reach an early diagnosis and for patients to have timely treatment, which can also ensure more precise and effective care.
“We must not lose sight of the fact that the prevention of drug use, and a comprehensive approach to addressing this problem, are essential to mitigate the harmful effects of these substances on general and visual health,” he pointed out.
