Biden reaches deal with Macron on using Russian assets to help Ukraine

The president of USA, Joe Bidenannounced this Sunday that he had reached an agreement with his French counterpart, Emmanuel Macronabout the use of frozen Russian assets to help Ukraine.

When asked by reporters if he discussed the issue of assets in a meeting with the French president in France and if an agreement was reached on how to use them, Biden responded “yes and yes.”

The meeting with the press took place after a visit to the Aisne-Marne cemetery, on the outskirts of Paris, to commemorate the American soldiers who died during the First World War.

During the ceremony, Biden took the opportunity to defend the work of the NATO and assured that today it is important to “reinforce alliances” and “strengthen” the transatlantic union.

This possible agreement with France comes two weeks after the economy ministers of the G7 group to meet in Italy to discuss how to use frozen Russian assets to support Ukraine.

At the meeting, the US would have proposed using the benefits of frozen Russian assets through a loan.

Despite achieving “progress” in this meeting, the powers have not reached an agreement on the possible legal framework or the amount to allocate and any decision was postponed to the G7 leaders.

The G7 froze some $300 billion in Russian assets, most of them in Europe, shortly after Moscow invaded its neighbor in February 2022.
