Polandone of the last countries to enter the European Union, votes this Sunday, June 9, for the formation of the European Parliament. Specifically, for the 53 seats that belong to you (one more than in the last elections for the distribution of the seats that were free after leaving the United Kingdom). But only citizens who are already 18 years old on election day can cast their votes, since this country applies the same age of majority as Spain. But there are several differences in the process. The truth is that in Poland you cannot vote by mail in the general elections. Only voters with disabilities with a confirmed degree of severe or moderate disability can do so, as stated on the official website of the elections in Poland.
Another of the big differences with respect to electoral system of Spain lies in the way of voting. In Poland, voters can mark the candidates from a closed list in order of preference, while in Spain the list is voted on as it appears, ordered by the parties themselves. In fact, Poland’s modus operandi is the most common and is repeated in twenty countries (Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Denmark, Slovakia, Slovenia, Estonia, Finland, Greece, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg , Netherlands, Czech Republic and Sweden).
Thus, the result of the 2024 European elections for Poland leaves the following order, for the moment, according to the estimates of the European Parliament:

Estimated results of the 2024 European elections in Poland. | European Parliament
European elections result in Poland 2019
During the last European elections, the Poles drew the composition of their seats in 2019. On that occasion there were at stake 52 seats which were distributed in the following way within the European Parliament:
- 27 MEPs to the Group of European Conservatives and Reformists
- 16 MEPs to the Group of the European People’s Party (Christian Democrats)
- 7 MEPs to the Group of the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats in the European Parliament
- 1 MEP to the Renew Europe Group
- 1 MEP to the Group of the Greens/European Free Alliance
The first group were the 25 seats obtained by the extreme right and openly eurosceptic formation Law and Justice, along with two MEPs from two other parties. On the other hand, the eleven seats of the formation Civic Platform, formation of the current Polish Prime Minister, entered into the Group of the European People’s Party with the five seats of two other formations. In total, eleven Polish parties entered the European chamber five years ago.
The two parties with the most votes are once again part of the electoral lists in a context in which Poles have experienced a fall of faith in Europe, despite the fact that it was one of the most pro-European areas with 90% support. Now it has dropped to 72%. The Government considers that behind this fall are the alleged disinformation campaigns instigated by Russia. In fact, this conflict continues to be one of the determining factors in the European campaign in this country.
Polls show that, for Poles, the greatest advantage of belonging to Europe is the “military security“which it offers them, ahead of the freedom to travel or work in any community country. Thus, the current Executive feared that participation could drop drastically, given that Poles have been called to the polls two other times in the last six months causing some “electoral fatigue.” They contemplated the possibility that participation would drop even more than it did in 2019, when only 45.7% went to vote.
