Coalition for a Solidarity Europe is an alliance of parties of traditional conservative peripheral nationalisms that has won a seat in these European elections on June 9. The coalition has thus managed to maintain the seat that it already achieved in the 2019 European elections, and which the PNV has occupied. In this way, CEUS has been the ninth Spanish formation to get a seat in Europe, behind the PP (22), PSOE (20), Vox (6), Ahora Repúblicas (3), Sumar (3), Se fin la fiesta (3), Podemos (2) and Junts (1).

The four parties that make up CEUS are EAJ-PNV, Canarian Coalition, Geroa Bai (Navarra) and Proposta per les Illes (PI), Balearic nationalist party. The seat obtained corresponds to Oihane Agirregoitia Martínez, from EAJ-PNV, former councilor at Bilbao City Council and general director of Good Government at the Bizkaia Provincial Council. It is she who has led the list and who has attended the electoral debates.

In this 9J, CEUS has managed to gather nearly 281,000 votes, 1.61% of the Spanish votes that have allowed them to narrowly enter the European Parliament.

However, the Canarian Coalition has not been able to be represented in the European Parliament as the second seat, which Carlos Alonso would have occupied, was left out.

The origin of CEUS

This is not the first time that CEUS has participated in these elections as a coalition, although the acronym remains unknown to the majority of the population.

In fact, CEUS has existed as a coalition since 2009, although it was in the 2019 call when they added the ‘Solidaria’ part. In the European elections of 2014Coalition for Europe won three seats, one more than in 2009.

Its members have varied according to their calls. For example, in the 2019 elections, Demòcrates Valencians and Compromiso por Galicia were also part of the coalition. The Valencians have still asked to vote for the CEUS.

We could even trace the origin of this party to 1999, when they presented themselves with a similar name, the European Coalition, although at that time it was led by the Canary Coalition and PNV was not part of it.
