Portugal fears that the festive long weekend will repeat the situation of the 2019 general elections, when around 69% of voters did not vote. In fact, more citizens participated in the European elections that year, 50.66% compared to 30.75% in the general elections. This was the worst rate since joining the EU in 1986. However, the last vote in March marked a record high turnout.
The country faced elections a few months ago after the resignation of the prime minister, the socialist Antonio Costafor corruption case. In these elections, participation experienced an increase, being the highest since 2015. In fact, at 4:00 p.m., 51.96% of the census had voted, more than on the entire day of the 2022 elections, according to the Portuguese Ministry of the Interior. Participation reached 66%, the highest level in Portugal for years.
