The German Police have shot and wounded a man who attacked participants in a far-right demonstration in the city of Mannheim, in southwestern Germany. The man has injured several people, including a police officer, according to the agents.

The Police have not yet been able to give details about the extent of injuries suffered by those gathered in the city’s central Marktplatz square. A live broadcast from the same location by anti-Islam activist Michael Stürzenberger showed the 59-year-old preparing to address a small crowd.

“A firearm was used against the attacker“Mannheim police said in a statement. A rescue helicopter was present and trams in the area were suspended. Images circulating on social media carried a watermark linked to his anti-Islam lobbying tour.” Open Eyes” showed a bearded man attacking people in the square with a knife, one of whom suffered a deep cut to the leg.

Stuerzenberger, who describes himself as a journalist critical of Islam, has been a member of several far-right anti-Islamist organizations, including the PEGIDA movement, which holds regular marches in cities, especially in eastern Germany. In the images, a police officer is seen shooting the attacker while he fights on the ground with another man, after which he rolls in pain on the cobblestones. There was no immediate danger to the public, police said in a statement.
