The Prime Minister of Slovakia, Robert Fico, who is already “out of danger” after having received “five shots” in a shooting that took place this Wednesday at the end of a government meeting in the town of Handlová.
Fico is a socialist converted into a nationalist whose speech has ended very close to that of Viktor Orbánthe Hungarian Prime Minister and the Russian President, Vladimir Putin.
A populist politician who, in addition to being nationalist, is pro-Russian and intolerable with immigration. Hence, he is not very willing to lend a hand in the solidarity distribution of migrants promoted by the EU. The rights of homosexuals also choke him and He is also not willing to accept same-sex marriage.a speech very similar to that of his Hungarian counterpart Viktor Orbán.
At 59 years old, he had already been through great power twice. In fact, in one of his “reigns” he is the architect of Slovakia’s entry into the eurozone in 2008.
In 2023 he really wanted to return to power. He had been absent since 2018 when a wave of popular protests led him to abandon it after accusing him of having had dealings with the mafia and allegedly ordering the murder of a journalist.
As a good populist, he has known how to use the discontent of the less privileged classes in his country to his advantage. Inflation has skyrocketed in Slovakia, just the opposite of purchasing power, and once in power he has begun an ironclad path of rapprochement with Russia and, therefore, a decided retreat in his aid to Ukraine.
Ruth Ferrero, professor of Political Science UCM, explains in laSexta that Fico may have “many” enemies because since he came to power “he has launched a series of reforms similar to that of Orbán.”
Furthermore, the teacher has insisted on the information from Reuters in which they claimed that behind the shooting there could be a “political motive“. “This is what my sources have assured me,” explained the teacher, who added that the alleged perpetrator of the shooting has assured that he does not like the “policy that is being implemented in the Government.”
Ferrero explained that Fico “is a political leader who belonged to the Slovak socialist party and has lost his membership as a consequence of the political alliance he had to form this government.”
