Biden and Trump will have two electoral debates, the first at the end of June

The president of USAthe democrat Joe Biden, and his Republican rival donald trump will hold two electoral debates in their race for the White House, the first of them on June 27.

After months of uncertainty about whether the traditional debates would take place on this occasion, Biden, 81, proposed this Wednesday to Trump (77) two meetings ahead of the November elections.

“Give me a treat, friend. I’m ready to do it even twice.”declared the president in a video published on X.

“Let’s set the dates, Donald. “I heard you have Wednesdays off.” He added with a hint of irony, referring to the days that the New York court in which the former president has been tried for a month has been on pause.

Trump immediately responded to the challenge. ““I’m ready and eager.” He replied on his Truth Social network. “Come on, ready for the fight.” he added.

The television network CNN announced that the first debate will be held on June 27 at its headquarters in Atlanta, without an audience present in the studio. The second debate will be on September 10 and will be hosted by the ABC channel.

Confirming that he will attend the debate on ABC, Biden commented in a provocative tone: “Trump says he will take care of his transportation himself. Me too. I’ll go on my plane. I plan to keep it for four more years.”

In addition, Trump said he had accepted an invitation from the conservative channel Fox News to hold a third debate, a face-to-face debate rejected by the Biden campaign.

Biden avoided the three meetings proposed by the bipartisan US electoral debate commission and opted, instead, to offer two confrontations, in June and September, without an audience present and organized by the media.

“Donald Trump lost two debates against me in 2020. Since then, he has not appeared in any other debates. “He now acts like he wants to debate me again,” Biden had said in the video published on X.

In Truth Social, the former president described Biden as “the WORST debater” who has ever been “confronted” and after confirming his willingness to debate at “the two proposed times,” he asked for a “very big place, although Biden is supposedly afraid of crowds.”

Calendar

Biden’s campaign sent a letter to the US election debate commission saying it was rejecting its schedule for three debates between September and October.

In it, campaign manager Jen O’Malley Dillon indicated that Biden plans to participate in debates organized by television networks.

O’Malley added that the current format, the same for many years, “is out of step with changes in the structure of our elections and the interests of voters.”

“The debate should be useful to Americans who watch it on television, not become entertainment for an audience of agitated supporters and donors,” O’Malley wrote.

Biden’s team proposed the first face-to-face debate at the end of June “after Donald Trump’s criminal trial in New York likely ends and after President Biden returns from his meeting with world leaders at the G7 Summit.

The second at the beginning of September would allow us to arrive in time to influence the early vote, but it would not keep the candidates out of the electoral campaign in the “critical period of late September and October”.

In his letter, O’Malley criticized the commission for having been “unable” to enforce the deadlines for each candidate’s interventions in 2020. Therefore, Biden’s team proposed strict rules, such as keeping microphones off outside of the allotted time, to prevent them from talking over each other.
