USA and China have agreed to jointly organize a summit on the methane during the COP29, which will be held in Azerbaijan in November, the US State Department reported this Friday.
“Both parties intend to organize a second summit on methane and greenhouse gases other than CO2 during COP29,” states in a statement released at the end of two days of meetings in Washington between the climate emissaries of the two countries, the American John Podesta and the Chinese Liu Zhenmin.
Methane is a powerful greenhouse gas produced by fossil fuels.
According to the State Department, discussions focused on the energy transition, methane and non-CO2 greenhouse gases, the circular economy and energy efficiency, low-carbon cities and states/provinces, and deforestation.
The two countries with the highest greenhouse gas emissions have proposed to cooperate more in the fight against climate change.
It was the first meeting between both countries on climate since COP28 held in Dubai in December.
