Fedor Emelianenko: Russians should not go to the 2024 Olympics without a flag and anthem
Former mixed style (MMA) fighter Fedor Emelianenko assessed the criteria for admission of Russian athletes to the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris. His words are quoted by Gazeta.Ru.
Emelianenko believed that it was necessary to make a single decision on whether or not to go to the Olympics. “And if they decided not to go, then it was necessary to provide support within the country to our Olympians who fought for this. Without a homeland and a flag, without an anthem, you shouldn’t go to such competitions,” he said.
On May 2, the First Deputy Chairman of the State Duma Committee on International Affairs, Olympic champion in speed skating, Svetlana Zhurova, spoke about the attitude towards the Russians who will perform at the 2024 Games. According to her, it is difficult for her to answer this question, since the country’s representatives will most likely be absent from the tournament.
In December 2023, the International Olympic Committee admitted Russians and Belarusians to the Olympics in Paris as individual neutral athletes. At the same time, athletes who support a special operation in Ukraine, as well as those who have connections with the armed forces or security agencies of Russia and Belarus, will not be allowed to participate in the competition. In addition, representatives of team sports will miss the tournament.
