Several British universities have begun to set up pro-Palestinian camps to reject the war in the Gaza stripbut organizers do not expect a repeat of the violence witnessed in the United States protests, according to the so-called Palestine Solidarity Campaign.
The first university camp was set up last week in Warwickand later on the campuses of Bristol board, SheffieldEdit, Manchester, leeds and Newcastleaccording to the organizers.
The campaign manager of the aforementioned group, Stella Swain, told the media this Thursday that this week and next, “more places will accept that call for support. All of the protests so far have been completely peaceful and there is nothing to indicate that they will not be. “There would be very little reason for a (police) response.”
He added that in the peaceful protests in the United Kingdom, students participated who addressed issues such as colonialism and described the demonstrations as “peaceful but educational events.”
Swain stressed that he hoped that no politician, whether they supported the cause or not, would want to see the British police act as the American police have done with the student protesters.
At the University of Manchester, a camp was set up in the Brunswick Park area on Wednesday.
“You can rest assured that we will do everything we can to keep things as usual and we urge protesters to act accordingly.“said a spokesperson for this educational institution.
“We are acutely aware of the need to ensure that everyone on our campus remains safe and secure and this will be of utmost importance”he added.
In the United States, student protests are calling for the end of their universities’ cooperation with the Israeli Government and in cities such as Los Angeles, New York and Austin they have led to altercations and arrests.
