The technology giant Google laid off 200 workers from its ‘central unit’ as part of a reorganization that will include moving some of the company’s functions to India and Mexico, CNBC reported.
The layoffs include information technology staff, its team of Python developers, technical infrastructure, security, application platforms, engineering, and core developers.
According to the company, the central unit is responsible for building the technical foundation behind the company’s flagship products and protecting users’ online security.
At least 50 of the laid-off workers were engineering and worked at the company’s offices in Sunnyvale, California, according to CNBC.
It further indicated that Asim Husain, vice president of Google’s developer ecosystem, informed his team of the layoffs in an email last week and in a subsequent meeting assured his employees that this was the largest reduction planned for his group this year.
“We intend to maintain our current global presence while expanding into high-growth global workforce locations.”, he then indicated in the email to the workers.
Alphabet, Google’s parent company, began cuts in 2023 and had already eliminated 12,000 jobs by January of this year. At the beginning of the year, it announced more mass layoffs and the most affected divisions were engineering and hardware. Meanwhile, it focuses on artificial intelligence (AI).
The latest cuts come as the company enjoys its fastest growth rate since early 2022, as well as improving profit margins.
