Zhurova predicted the absence of Russian athletes at the Olympics in Paris
First Deputy Chairman of the State Duma Committee on International Affairs, Olympic champion in speed skating Svetlana Zhurova spoke about the attitude towards Russians who will perform at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris. Her words are quoted by Soviet Sport.
According to her, it is difficult for her to answer this question, since the country’s representatives will most likely be absent from the tournament. “I think that no one will go to the Olympics. How can I support someone who won’t go anywhere? There is nothing to support here yet, and I don’t like to comment on hypothetical things,” Zhurova said.
Earlier, the head of the Russian Ski Racing Federation (FLGR), Elena Vyalbe, predicted a negative attitude of Russian citizens towards their compatriots who will compete at the Olympics. “I communicate with people, simple ones at that,” she emphasized.
In December 2023, the IOC allowed Russians and Belarusians to participate in the Olympics in Paris as individual neutral athletes. At the same time, athletes who support a special operation in Ukraine, as well as those who have connections with the armed forces or security agencies of Russia and Belarus, will not be allowed to participate in the competition. In addition, representatives of team sports will miss the tournament.
