IFJ condemns the death of 109 journalists in Gaza since October

The International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) condemned this Thursday, on the eve of World Press Freedom Day, the death in Loop of at least 109 journalists and media workers since last October.

“The Federation calls on governments around the world, and in particular the Israeli Government, to protect the lives of journalists and freedom of the press in accordance with international obligations,” the IFJ said in a statement.

That organization, which serves as a global umbrella for the various national press associations and unions, noted that the number of media professionals who have died in Gaza since last October is unprecedented, with 102 Palestinians, four Israelis and three Lebanese.

“It is one of the deadliest conflicts in history for the media and, however, there is another critical victim: freedom of the press,” the FIP stressed.

That organization regretted that currently they can only report from the Gaza Strip the Palestinian journalists based in that enclave and the “international media teams integrated with the Israeli army under controlled conditions.”

“The IFJ has repeatedly called on Israel to allow the foreign press into Gaza and to stop hindering the work of journalists and the public’s right to freedom of expression,” added that platform.

According to the secretary general of the International Federation of Journalists, Anthony Bellanger, prolonging the ban on entering the Strip “is denying the world a true picture of the events in Gaza and deliberately infringes on press freedom.”
