Global wind industry set a record in 2023 by installing 117 GW of new capacity

The wind industry The world installed 117 gigawatts (GW) of new capacity in 2023, 50% more than the previous year and a new record, according to the annual report of the Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC), the body that brings together companies in the sector.

GWECbased in Lisbon, noted that, despite this new record, the global industry needs to triple its annual growth level, to at least 320 GW in 2030, to meet the COP28 climate goals and the objective of increasing the temperature by 1.5 ºC.

The organization highlighted that, despite a political and macroeconomic environment “turbulent“, the wind industry”is entering a new era of accelerated growth driven by greater political ambition, manifested in the historic adoption at COP28 of a goal of tripling renewable energy by 2030.

2023 was a record year for onshore wind capacity, which exceeded 100GW in a single year for the first time, reaching 106GW (54% more than the previous year).

In addition, 2023 was the second best year in history for offshore wind, with 10.8 GW installed.

In cumulative terms worldwide, all installed wind capacity exceeded the 1 terawatt (TW) mark, reaching 1,021 GW, 13% more than in 2022.

In 2023, 54 countries on all continents installed new wind capacity, with China, the United States, Brazil, Germany and India the main markets.

China broke a record with 75 GW of new installed capacity, 65% of the world total, in a year in which Latin America also recorded unprecedented figures.

With the boost especially from Brazil, which installed 4.8 GW, the region had a growth of 21% compared to 2022, while in Africa and the Middle East it shot up 182%.

GWEC revised its growth forecasts for the period 2024-2030 by 10%, to 1,210 GW, due to the implementation of industrial policies in major economies, the boost in offshore wind and promising growth among emerging markets and economies. Developing.
