The world record holder in swimming from Russia explained her refusal to participate in the Olympics

World record swimmer Chikunova called the conditions for participation in the Olympic Games unacceptable

World record holder in swimming Evgenia Chikunova explained the decision to refuse to participate in the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris. Her words are quoted by Match TV.

Chikunova noted that she considers the conditions for admitting Russian athletes to competitions unacceptable. “I made a somewhat difficult decision for myself that I would not go to the Olympics. And right now I don’t regret it,” the athlete added.

Last April, Chikunova set a new world record at the Russian Championships in Kazan. She swam the 200-meter backstroke in 2 minutes and 17.55 seconds.

In December 2023, the International Olympic Committee allowed Russians and Belarusians to participate in the Games in Paris. They will be able to take part in the tournament as individual neutral athletes. At the same time, athletes who support a special operation in Ukraine, or who have connections with the Armed Forces or security agencies of Russia and Belarus will not be allowed to participate in the competition. In addition, representatives of team sports will miss the tournament.
