Naby Keïta, ex-Liverpool, is suspended until the end of the season by Werder Bremen after abandoning delegation

This Tuesday (16), Naby Keïta was suspended and fined by Werder Bremen after the player left the delegation in the duel against Bayer Leverkusen in the Bundesliga. After learning that he would not be in the starting team, the athlete from Guinea decided to return home and did not accompany the team in the game that marked the title of Xabi Alonso and company in the German Championship.

In a statement, Bremen stated that they had imposed a “substantial” fine on the player and that Keïta will no longer train with the team nor be part of the main dressing room.

“Naby #Keïta suspended until the end of the season. The Green-Whites also imposed a significant fine on the midfielder. From now on, the 28-year-old player will not train with the team nor will he be in the professional locker room,” says the publication.

Bremen’s head of professional football, Clemens Fritz, expressed his discontent with the athlete amid the club’s complicated situation in the championship.

“As a club, we will not tolerate Naby’s behavior. He let his team down at a time of difficulty surrounding our recent form and squad availability and put his own interests above those of the team. We cannot allow this,” Fritz said.

With the defeat to Leverkusen, Werder Bremen was in 12th place, with 31 points in 29 games. The club is still fighting to escape relegation, and is five points behind Mainz, a club in 16th place that will compete in the relegation playoffs.

Naby Keïta had a remarkable spell at Liverpool, where he stayed from 2018 until 2023. For the English club, the player from Guinea played 129 matches and scored 11 goals, winning titles such as a Champions League and a Premier League.
