Inflation in Mexico rebounds to 4.48% in the first half of March

The rate of inflation general mexican It rebounded in the first fortnight of March to 4.48% annually, breaking three fortnights of decline, the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Inegi) reported this Friday.

The data, above market expectations, is greater than 4.4% of all of February, when it had ended with three consecutive months on the rise after having closed 2023 at a rate of 4.66% and having risen in January to 4.88%.

The statistics institute recorded an increase in 0.27% in the consumer price index (CPI) compared to the previous 15 days.

The Inegi recalled that in the same period of 2023, a year ago, biweekly inflation was 0.15% and the annual 7.12%.

The underlying price index, considered a better parameter to measure general shortages because it eliminates items with high volatility in their prices, increased by 0.33% biweekly and a 4.69% annually, Inegi detailed in its report.

The non-underlying item grew by 0.09% at a biweekly rate and a 3.84% year-on-year.

Within the underlying subgroup, commodities increased 0.1% in the fortnight and a 3.96% in the year.

Services advanced 0.61% biweekly and a 5.57% annual.

In non-core, agricultural prices rose by 0.34% with respect to the immediately previous period, and a 4.69% compared to the same period last year.

Energy prices and rates authorized by the Government contracted a 0.12% in the fortnight, but they increased 3.12% in the year.

The price index of the minimum consumption basket, made up of 176 products and services, grew by 0.17% biweekly and a 4.03% at annual rate.

Consumer prices closed in 2023 with an increase of 4.66%, above market expectations, but below 7.82% of 2022 and 7.36% of 2021, both years with the highest level in the last 20 years.

On the other hand, 2020 inflation closed at 3.15%.

The data for the first half of March is above the goal of the 3% annual of the Bank of Mexico, which this Thursday reduced the interest rate to eleven%.
