ISU head Kim Jae-yeol: surprised that Valieva was found with almost 60 substances

President of the International Skating Federation (ISU) Kim Jae-yeol assessed the doping case of Russian figure skater Kamila Valieva. His words are quoted by Sports.

“We were surprised that almost 60 substances were found in 15-year-old Valieva. This is not only a question of clean sport, but also a question of the safety of athletes,” he said. The head of the ISU added that the organization will increase the level of education and commitment to the principles of clean sport of national federations.

Earlier, the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) reported that Valieva took dozens of different approved drugs and nutritional supplements between 2020 and 2021. In the positive sample of the skater dated December 25, 2021, in addition to the prohibited trimetazidine, three permitted substances were found – the steroid ecdysterone, hypoxene and L-carnitine.

On January 29, CAS disqualified Valieva for four years. The period of suspension is counted from the moment the positive sample is taken. The figure skater lost gold at the European Championships and the team tournament at the 2022 Olympic Games.
