Peruvian Congress will prevent the entry of parliamentarians and unvaccinated workers

A total of 130 legislators make up the parliament, among which there are at least 16 who have not been vaccinated for different reasons.

Peru’s Congress announced this Monday that only parliamentarians and workers vaccinated with two doses against covid-19 will be able to enter its headquarters, to mitigate infections due to the confirmation of cases with the omicron variant in the country.

“Entry to the facilities of the Congress of the Republic will be only for people who have at least two doses of the vaccine,” said a statement posted on his Twitter account.

The measure was adopted in compliance with a government regulation in force since the 15th of this month, which prevents those who do not have a vaccination card from entering public places.

A total of 130 legislators make up the parliament, among which there are at least 16 not vaccinated for different reasons, according to the Peruvian press.

Only 13 congressmen applied the booster dose, while the government announced this Monday that it reduced the wait for the third dose from five to three months due to the increase in infections by the omciron variant, with the detection of 12 cases.

The congressional statement comes after knowing on Saturday that the left-wing congresswoman Sigrid Bazán, vaccinated with two doses, tested positive for covid-19 at the end of a week marked by face-to-face sessions in parliament.

The use of a KN95 mask or two surgical masks is already mandatory in Parliament, even during speeches in the Chamber and committee meetings.

The Peruvian Congress indicated that those who lack the doses will have to work remotely from their homes, as indicated by the current regulation.

The South American country is facing an outbreak, for which the government banned family gatherings and parties at Christmas and New Years, and reinforced the vaccination campaign.

Despite the fact that 74% of the population has been immunized with two doses, the emergence of the omicron variant activated all the alarms.

74% of those vaccinated “is absolutely insufficient in the omicron variant. We need to exceed 80%, (this variant) eludes the effectiveness of vaccines ”, warned the Minister of Health, Hernando Cevallos.

Peru, with a population of 33 million people, has the highest death rate from the pandemic in the world, with 6,122 per million inhabitants, according to an AFP balance based on official figures.
