The irregular arrivals of migrants to Spain They increased by 308% from January 1 to March 15 compared to the same period in 2023, with the entry by sea or land of a total of 15,148 immigrants.

The increase occurred mainly due to the spike in arrivals to the Canary Islands (Atlantic), which increased by 469%, according to the latest fortnightly report from the Spanish Ministry of the Interior, released this Monday.

According to this report, since the beginning of the year, 12,393 immigrants have arrived in the archipelago aboard 190 cayucos (fragile boats also known as pateras), compared to the 2,178 that were registered at this time in 2023.

By sea, 2,011 foreigners arrived irregularly to the Iberian Peninsula and the Balearic Islands (Mediterranean), a 54% more, distributed in 131 boats.

The two cities that Spain has in African territory, Ceuta and Melilla, although with much lower absolute numbers, also experienced a significant increase in irregular arrivals.

In the case of Melilla there was only one arrival by sea, compared to 32 the previous year, and 7 by land, when only one had been detected in 2023.
