Sterilization is the contraceptive most used by women in Venezuela

28% of the women who use contraceptives Venezuela have opted for female sterilization, which makes this method the most used by Venezuelan women, according to a study carried out by the Andrés Bello Catholic University (UCAB) in 2023, the results of which were presented this Wednesday.

“Female sterilization remains the most frequently reported method of regulating births among contraceptive users,” says the report from the Living Conditions Survey (Encovi), which is applied in more than 12,000 homes located in Caracas and nine other states in the country.

In general, explained the project coordinator, Anitza Freitez, women resort to this route “at very early ages” and after having conceived “two or three children”, or by suggestions from health workers.

He explained that the use of contraceptives is lower among young women between 15 and 24 years old, precisely during the period of their lives in which the highest fertility rate accumulates, Four. Five%especially among the poorest women.

In addition to sterilization, 22% of women use birth control pills to avoid pregnancy, while 6% of men perform vasectomies, a method that has been gaining ground in the last three years, when non-governmental organizations, some feminist, have promoted this option.

Regarding health in general, the study revealed that the main illness of Venezuelans is the cold, followed by cardiovascular problems, stomach or digestive upsets, fever, diabetes, pain in the spine and joints, and mental or related disorders.

The public health system, which serves the vast majority of Venezuelans, has faced several problems for years due to the deterioration of hospitals, a shortage of work materials and professionals, as well as low salaries, a situation that has been denounced on repeated occasions by the health union.
