The EU will invest 176 million euros to promote digital technologies

The European Commission (EC) launched this Friday a series of calls, financed with more than 176 million euros within the Digital Europe community program, to promote the technology sector of the European Union (EU) and the digital skills of citizens.

These calls will be open to companies, public administrations and other entities of the EU Member States, as well as to the member countries of the European Free Trade Association (EFTA) and the European Economic Area (EEA), the Commission reported in a release.

This investment round includes 74 million euros in additional aid for the creation of common European data spaces, which is the “cornerstone” of the EU data strategy that aims to create a single information market.

Similarly, Brussels will invest 30 million euros in the creation of a cloud computing infrastructure pilot project to promote “balanced use” of these technologies and thereby guarantee their interoperability.

A further €67.5 million will be invested in projects that seek to accelerate and strengthen the adoption of artificial intelligence technologies in the Union, while supporting large companies and SMEs (small and medium-sized enterprises) in their preparation to comply the community law on artificial intelligence.

Calls will also be launched to invest 4 million euros in advanced digital skills, with investments in the Digital Skills and Employment platform – to help adults acquire basic digital skills – and in a project that seeks to achieve gender convergence in the sector, reported the community Executive.

Likewise, another million euros will be allocated to a project to strengthen collaboration in the deployment of cross-border digital public services.

The deadline for these calls is May 29, 2024. In addition, Brussels hopes to launch new calls for aid this summer within the framework of the 2023-2024 work program.
