Purchase of Quickmail firm closed after Competition veto of the Swiss Post Office

The Swiss logistics company Planzer announced this Thursday the purchase of the postal delivery firm Quickmail and its subsidiary Quickpac, two weeks after the Swiss Competition Commission (COMCO) vetoed the acquisition of the latter by the national postal services.

Quickmail will continue to operate as an independent section, although in the medium term it will be grouped under the “Planzer Paket” brand, the purchasing firm said in a statement.

COMCO prevented the merger between Quickmail and the Swiss postal service (called La Poste in French, Die Post in German and La Posta in Italian) arguing that the operation would create a regime close to a monopoly and that there were other alternatives.

Quickmail, an emerging firm born in 2009 and that based its business on factors such as sustainability, by using mainly electric vehicles for distribution, was looking for a buyer due to the continuous decline in the volume of letters, one of the markets it was targeting, and the intense competition in the parcel market.

Planzer, established in 1936, has branches in Switzerland, Italy, Luxembourg, Germany, France and Hong Kong, and its long-distance shipments often use trains as a means of transport, also for the sake of environmental sustainability.
