A 7.3-magnitude earthquake struck eastern Indonesia on Tuesday, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported.
The earthquake had its epicenter north of the island of Flores, with a depth of 18.5 km, where the movement triggered panic at 03:20 GMT.
“I was in the field. People were running in panic. I stood still, scared, ”said Nuraini, a resident of Adonara Island in Indonesia.
Initially, no deaths or significant damage were reported in the areas affected by the quake.
“In the places near the epicenter (…) it is still safe, there has been no damage,” Gege Hadjon, head of the Flores Este district, told Metro TV.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center lifted the tsunami warning that it had issued after the earthquake.
Indonesia experiences frequent earthquakes and volcanic eruptions due to its location in the Pacific “Ring of Fire”, an arc of intense telluric activity that stretches from Japan to Southeast Asia.
In 2004, Indonesia suffered a devastating 9.1-magnitude earthquake off the coast of Sumatra, which triggered a tsunami that killed 220,000 in the region, including 170,000 in Indonesia.
In 2018, another powerful earthquake shook the island of Lombok, followed by several more earthquakes in the following two weeks that left more than 550 people dead.
That same year, a 7.5 magnitude earthquake and subsequent tsunami on Sulawesi Island left more than 4,300 dead or missing. (I)
