Another 800,000 doses from Sinopharm are expected to arrive in the next few days.
Nicaragua received 200,000 anticovid vaccines this Sunday, manufactured by its new ally, China, three days after Managua severed relations with Taiwan and restored them with Beijing, amid criticism from the United States.
On an Air China plane that landed in Managua, the Nicaraguan delegation that traveled to formalize relations with Beijing arrived, led by Rafael and Laureano Ortega, sons of President Daniel Ortega and his wife and vice president, Rosario Murillo, official media reported.
The arrival of a transatlantic airline is not usual in Nicaragua, which lacks direct flights with other regions.
“We deeply appreciate this gesture of solidarity, cooperation, friendship and brotherhood of the people and Government of the People’s Republic of China,” said Laureano Ortega, presidential advisor for investments after his arrival.
He anticipated that another 800,000 doses from the Sinopharm firm are expected to arrive in the coming days.
“It is an honor to arrive in Nicaragua on a special Air China flight that has traveled about 30 hours,” said the representative of the Chinese Foreign Ministry Yu Bo, who is visiting the country.
This is the first Air China plane to land in Nicaragua since the Ortega government announced last Thursday the reopening of diplomatic ties with the Asian giant, suspended since 1990, and its break with Taiwan, a nation that assisted it with millionaire loans no refundable.
Laureano Ortega said that during his visit to China he discussed possible cooperation projects and met with trade and cooperation authorities.
The surprise diplomatic turnaround came amid growing tension between China and the United States over Taiwan, an independent island since 1949 that Beijing claims as part of its territory.
Also after the tightening of Washington’s immigration and economic sanctions against officials of the Ortega government, he was reelected in November for a fourth consecutive term with most of his rivals in prison.
“The Ortega-Murillo regime continues to make selfish decisions at the expense of the Nicaraguan people, who run the risk of suffering the loss of a democratic and trustworthy partner in Taiwan,” United States Assistant Secretary of State for the Western Hemisphere Brian said recently. Nichols.
International sanctions threaten to veto Managua’s access to new credit. (I)
