Uruguay exceeds 2,500 evacuated due to floods

More than 2,500 people are displaced from their homes in the north and northwest of Uruguay by floods that affect that area of ​​the country.

This was reported by the National Emergency System in a statement in which it detailed that 216 people were evacuated and 2,285 are self-evacuated in the departments (provinces) of Artigas, Paysandú and Salto.

Specifically, in Artigas there are 156 displaced people (19 evacuees and 137 self-evacuated) and the level of the Uruguay River continues to fall. However, although at this moment it is 7.92 meters – 38 centimeters less than yesterday – it is still above the established safety level, which is 6.30 meters.

In Paysandú there are 1,585 displaced people (30 evacuees and 1,555 self-evacuated) and the river level increased eight centimeters compared to this Monday. According to this, it is at 7.60 meters when its safety level is 6.50 meters.

In Salto there are 70 displaced people (167 evacuees and 593 self-evacuated) and there the Uruguay River remains stable at 13.75 meters, although above its safety level which is 12.30 meters.

The latest report from the Hydrology Area of ​​the Mixed Technical Commission of Salto Grande, made this Tuesday, until this Wednesday afternoon the evacuated flow will vary between 23,000 and 24,500 cubic meters per second.

On the other hand, in the latest Hydrological Situation and Forecast Report issued by the National Water Directorate of the Ministry of the Environment, prepared this Monday, it maintains that “based on the rain “Having already recorded the meteorological forecasts for the basin that supplies the Salto Grande dam, a flood wave is expected for November 6 and 7, with similar characteristics to the one that occurred recently.”
