La Sagrada Familia: images of the new tower of the iconic basilica that has been under construction for 140 years

It is the tallest of the nine completed towers and the first to be inaugurated since 1976.

From tonight, a new star shines on the heights of Barcelona.

With 12 points and a weight of 5.5 tons, it is the finisher of the Tower of the Virgin, that this Wednesday was inaugurated in the basilica of the sacred Family.

The construction of the work conceived by the architect Antonio gaudi started on 1882 and it is already in the last stages. It is expected that in this decade, despite the delays due to the covid-19 pandemic, it will finally be concluded.

Among the elements to be completed are the 18 columns that Gaudí devised.

The Tower of the Virgin, 127 meters high, was crowned a few days ago with the textured glass star with a stainless steel structure on the edges.

Has a diameter of 7.5 meters, weighs 5.5 tons and it has involved an investment of about US $ 1.7 million.

With a great popular festival in the streets and inside the Catholic basilica, hundreds of people gathered for the mass and the lighting of the star.

It is the tallest of the nine completed towers and the first one opened since 1976.

The main column, dedicated to Jesus Christ and topped with a cross, still remains to be completed. it will be the highest: 172 meters.

The archbishop of Barcelona, Juan José Omella, led the religious celebration and the lighting of the star.

“Gaudí, known as God’s architect, laid the foundations for a temple that would be, years later, one of the most beautiful and impressive on the entire planet. A temple that has been under construction for more than five generations ”, said Omella.

“Without intending it, the temple of the Sagrada Familia is the emblem of Barcelona. And today we are lucky enough to be able to inaugurate and bless the tower dedicated to the Mother of God ”, he added.

Although it is projected to be completed in 2026, the Sagrada Familia has stopped receiving the more than 4.7 million visitors with which it closed 2019, before the pandemic.

As this is the main source of financing for the project, the architect director of the work, Jordi Fauli, says that it is not certain that the goal can be achieved.

“We cannot give an estimate of when it will be finished because we do not know how the number of visitors will recover in the next few years,” says Fauli.

However, the goal is closer.
