Republican candidate to lead the Lower House seeks to secure the vote “in extremis”

The Republican candidate to lead the Low camera of USA, Jim Jordan sent a letter to his colleagues on Monday in which he defends his candidacy and urges them to unite, the day before that chamber puts the position to a vote.

“The principles that unite us Republicans are far greater than the disagreements that divide us, and the differences between us and our Democratic colleagues far outweigh our internal divisions. (…) It is time for us to come together to get back to work,” he said in that letter.

Jordan has run twice for the position within the conservative ranks: the first time he was beaten by Steve Scalise, but when he withdrew due to the lack of necessary support he ran again and last Friday he won in that race over Austin Scott.

“I will work tirelessly to defend and expand our majority”said the current president of the Judicial Committee of the Lower House, who indicated that his objective will be “to empower” to the different committees and their presidents so that this chamber can continue with its work.

The position of “speaker”, As that position is known in English, it has been vacant since fellow Republican Kevin McCarthy was dismissed on October 3 after a motion against him presented by the radical Matt Gaetz, of the same party.

The interim presidency is currently occupied by the conservative Patrick McHenry, but until there is a new president, new resolutions or bills cannot be approved at a time when the budgets for the current fiscal year must be closed and when authorization is pending. more aid to Ukraine or Israel.

The Democrats have proposed their leader in the House, Hakeem Jeffries, who last January also ran to preside over the institution, on that occasion against McCarthy.

The vote is in principle scheduled for this Tuesday. Since the Republicans took control of that House in the November 2022 midterm elections, they have 221 seats there, compared to 212 Democrats.

Jordan needs 217 legislators to decide in his favor, but when last Friday the party asked his colleagues if they would support him in that final vote, only 152 assured him of their support, so the scrutiny, if it goes ahead, will be presents tight.

“In recent weeks, each of you has communicated the issues that most concern you and those you represent. (…) In those conversations we have discussed how we can move forward better. And we must do it,” concluded the legislator, who has the public support of both former President Donald Trump (2017-2021) and Gaetz himself.
