“We know our stores play an important role in their communities, but we can only be successful if the working and shopping environment is safe for everyone,” the company said in a statement.
The chain also noted that before making this decision it invested in strategies to prevent and stop theft and organized crime in its stores; among them, putting numerous products in locked display cases.
He mentioned that he took the steps of hiring more security staff, using third-party guard services and implementing theft deterrent tools.
“Despite our efforts, unfortunately we continue to face fundamental challenges in operating these stores safely and successfully,” He also indicated in the statement.
“Looking ahead, we remain committed to serving customers with more than 150 locations open in markets where closures are occurring and on Target.com,” he added.
He highlighted that in New York 96 stores remain open with more than 20,000 employees; in Seattle with 22 establishments and nearly 4,000 workers; while in the San Francisco/Oakland market it has 32 locations and more than 6,400 employees.
In the Portland market, 15 stores that employ more than 2,500 people will remain open.
