The countries of the European Union are resisting making a decision on the Spanish request to make the use of Catalan, Basque and Galician official in the European Union until a legal opinion from the Council of the EU is on the table on the consequences of the measure and an analysis of its economic and practical impact on the functioning of the block.
This has become evident after 40 minutes of discussion in the meeting of Ministers of General Affairs of the European Union held in Brussels and which concluded without the matter being put to a vote, because the delegations need “more time” to study the matter, European sources have reported.
About twenty ministers have taken the floor to express their doubts and the current presidency held by Spain has “taken note” of the positions of its partners in the EU and announced that the Council “will take up the matter at a future meeting”without clarifying the deadlines, the sources have indicated.
