First, we sow the seeds, then wait for them to germinate, then transplant them into pots and let the plants grow in a warm place. When it gets warmer outside, we find a suitable place for them and transplant them into the ground. Now it’s time for regular fertilization, tying up and taking care of it so that beautiful, plump peppers appear in the summer. And when the season ends, we pick the last vegetables and the bushes go to the compost. Isn’t this a huge waste of time and work?
Don’t throw away the peppers!
Many people do not know that, unlike tomatoes or cucumbers, which in Poland are single-season, peppers can be overwintered. Thanks to this, all our work will not be wasted and we will not have to start everything again in the new year. You just need to know how to take care of pepper bushes so that they will serve us for a few more years.
Give her some love
When the season ends, pepper bushes should be transplanted to a warmer place before frost. The best conditions are cool rooms (approx. 10 degrees C), bright and not exposed to frost. If the bushes are placed in a warm place, they will bear fruit constantly. These plants are susceptible to pests in winter, so make sure that in the new place they will not be exposed to, for example, aphids. Pepper plants that are to be wintered indoors should be pest-free, healthy and undamaged. In winter, we should water them carefully, once every 2-3 weeks, avoiding overwatering. Too wet soil and dry air resulting from the heating season make plants susceptible to fungi and diseases.
Thanks to such overwintered bushes, our peppers will enjoy again in the new season. Moreover, it is in the second and subsequent years that peppers bear the most fruit. In addition, they are less sensitive to “inconveniences”. So it’s definitely worth taking them home for the winter and giving them some love. They will definitely return the favor next year.
