This is the currency of Celia Cruz and her cry “¡Azúcar!” In U.S.A.

The famous Cuban singer Celia Cruz, whose death marked the 20th anniversary on July 16, and his popular exclamation “Sugar!” they appear on a 25-cent coin whose design has just been revealed, although it will not enter circulation until 2024.

The US Mintthe United States Mint, dedicated to the “Guarachera de Cuba” one of the “quarters” (quarter dollar) of a series called “American Women Quarters”, which began issuing in 2022 and will continue until 2025 in order to honor the advances and contributions of women to this country.

The program establishes that five of these new coins come out every year and in 2024, in addition to that of Celia Cruz, those of the Episcopalian reverend Pauli Murray, that of Patsy Takemoto Mink, the first woman of color to be a congresswoman, the surgeon and defender of women’s rights Mary Edwatds Walker and the political activist and educator Zitkala Sa, will enter into circulation.

The Casa de la Moneda defines Celia Cruz when presenting the coin as “a Cuban-American singer, cultural icon, and one of the most popular Latin artists of the 20th century”.

The obverse of his coin depicts a portrait of George Washington, originally composed and sculpted by Laura Gardin Fraser to commemorate his 200th anniversary.

The reverse shows Celia Cruz flashing her dazzling smile in a performance dressed in one of her signature outfits and an inscription to her right: “!Sugar!”, his cry to make people dance.

The singer, who went into exile in the United States in 1961 and never returned to Cuba, has been the subject of several tributes on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of her death from cancer.

The Cuban community paid tribute to her by dedicating their parade and float to her in New York, where its mayor, Eric Adams, declared July 16 “Celia Cruz Day,” while her followers did not mind the heavy rain and flocked to her mausoleum at Woodlawn Cemetery in the Bronx.

In Miami, a city she frequently visited, an exhibition of objects that belonged to her will open on July 27, including her collection of stage dresses and wigs.
