The Chinese Qu Dongyu, re-elected as FAO director with more than 90% of the votes

The Chinese What Dongyu was re-elected this Sunday as general director of the United Nations for Agriculture and Food (FAO) after receiving 168 votes from the 182 member countries, which represents a support of more than 90%.

Nominated by China, Qu was the only candidate for the position after the withdrawal of the other applicants, so he will renew for a second term that will run until July 31, 2027.

The election took place during the FAO Conference, which takes place from 1 to 7 July in Rome.

In a note, the organization has recalled that since his appointment in 2019, Qu “He has led a wide range of reforms and initiatives to review FAO’s business model, improve efficiencies and implement best practices that support program and administrative effectiveness.”

During his first term, the director general had to deal with conflicts that had a direct impact on food security, such as the COVID-19 pandemic, the war in Ukraine and inflation, in addition to the climate crisis.

“In humanitarian and emergency response, FAO has advocated for increased investment in building medium- and long-term resilience, livelihood protection and disaster risk reduction alongside humanitarian action, especially in sensitive contexts” , supports the statement.

In addition, the FAO “has intensified its prevention and anticipation work in order to address the root causes of food crises.”

Likewise, in 2021 it created the World Food Forum (WFF) to include scientific knowledge and the latest technologies in the fight against climate change and the transformation of food systems.

Following the Conference, FAO will organize three events in October: the Global Youth Forum, the Mano a Mano Forum and the Science and Innovation Forum.
