Mexican beer dethrones Bud Light as the best-selling beer in the US.

The Mexican Modelo Especial beer was the best-selling beer in the United States last May, dethroning for the first time the local Bud Light, which had held the title of the most consumed beer in the country for more than two decades, local media reported.

In May, Modelo took 8.4% of the market share, compared to 7.3% for Bud Light, according to data offered by the Bumb Williams consultancy, cited by various media.

Modelo Especial seems to increase its sales growth every week as we head into the summer”, Williams pointed to the CNN channel.

In recent years, the US market has been changing not only its beer preferences towards Mexican brands, but also other products such as tequila and mezcal.

In May, sales of Modelo Especial grew 15.6%, to US$341.9 million, while those of Bud Light decreased 22.8%, to US$298.6 million.

Modelo Especial, which is made in Mexico and owned by Grupo Modelo, was owned by Anheuser-Busch until 2013, when Constellation acquired the US arm of Modelo’s parent company.

This company also owns other Grupo Modelo brands such as Corona Extra, Modelo Especial, Pacífico and Victoria.
