“Transformers: Rise of the Beasts” was the highest-grossing film in the United States this weekend, beating out “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse,” according to studio figures released Sunday.
“Transformers,” the seventh installment in the series, earned $60.5 million versus $55.4 million for “Spider-Verse,” which was in its second weekend.
Paramount Pictures showed “Rise of the Beasts” in 3,678 theaters beginning with Thursday previews. Although the critics weren’t very positive for the film, which scored 52% on Rotten Tomatoes.
While a $60.5 million opening seems like a small deal for a movie that had a production budget of $200 million, “Rise of the Beasts” is a movie that will make most of its money abroad.
The box office of “Spider-Verse” decreased by 54%, but in just two weeks, it has already surpassed the total domestic box office of the first film with 225.4 million dollars in admissions, and has become the most successful production of Sony Pictures Animation. Because it was well-reviewed, “Spider-Verse” may have better luck at the box office.
In third place was Disney’s “The Little Mermaid” with $23 million in its third weekend and opening in 4,320 theaters in the United States and Canada. The film has received $414.2 million globally to date.
“Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” came in fourth with $7 million in its sixth weekend and “The Boogeyman” came in fifth with $6.9 million in its second weekend.
The summer movie season could intensify in the coming weeks with the imminent releases of “Elemental” and “The Flash”.
