Poland, next to the Czech Republic, recorded the lowest unemployment rate in the European Union in April, according to the statistical office Eurostat. Greece and Spain appeared at the end of the list.

According to Eurostat estimates, over 13 million people were unemployed in the EU in April, of which 11 million in the euro area. On the other hand, the youth unemployment rate (under 25) remains high. In April it amounted to 13.8 percent. in the European Union and 13.9 percent. in the euro area. The lowest rate was recorded in Germany (6.1%) and the highest – again – in Greece (27.4%) and (28.4%). In Poland, however, it is 10.3 percent. “New historical minimum on the unemployment rate in the Eurozone: 6.5 percent. This is not the case everywhere – in the countries of the southern Euroland, lower levels were at the turn of 2007/2008. Nevertheless, it is light years from the stereotype formed 10 years ago” – they comment Pekao bank analysts.

What is the unemployment rate in Poland according to the Central Statistical Office?

Of course, when providing data on unemployment, Eurostat uses the BAEL (Live Forces Survey) methodology. Here, unemployment is measured on the basis of the respondents’ declarations. At the end of May, the Central Statistical Office provided its data (based on the number of people registered in employment offices), which show that unemployment in April amounted to 5.2 percent. (down from 5.4 percent in March). As we read, the number of unemployed registered in employment offices amounted to 821,900 against 846,900 people in March. This reading, in turn, was slightly better than the estimate of the Ministry of Family and Social Policy, which was presented at the beginning of May. At that time, it was initially estimated that the unemployment rate in Poland in April was 5.3 percent.
