The event occurred on the coasts between Miches and Celedonio.
At least eight people died after the shipwreck this Thursday in the eastern Dominican Republic of a boat that was heading clandestinely to Puerto Rico, the Navy reported.
The event occurred on the coasts between Miches and Celedonio, according to a statement from the institution, which states that a total of 22 people have been rescued alive.
Rescue unit teams, divers and Coast Guard personnel “are actively searching the area to save lives and prevent further human losses,” the note added.
The spokesman for the Navy of the Dominican Republic, José Vásquez, told EFE that for now the nationality and identity of the victims is unknown, as well as the number of people who were in the boat. For now, he said, “we are focused on the search for possible survivors.”
Through the statement, the Navy regretted what happened, especially when the authorities have issued alerts due to the current “adverse maritime conditions for fragile and small vessels” in that area.
Hundreds of Dominicans try to reach Puerto Rico each year in fragile boats to try to improve their economic situation. (I)
