Meeting of the European Union on the issue of EUR 100 million cancelled. Compensation will have to wait

A meeting in Brussels regarding compensation for farmers in the amount of EUR 100 million has been cancelled, Beata Płomecka, the Brussels correspondent of Polish Radio, has learned. The reason is the still binding import bans from Ukraine introduced by Slovakia and Hungary. Of the EUR 100 million for Poland, Bulgaria, Romania, Slovakia and Hungary, Poland was to receive the most, nearly EUR 40 million.

“The meeting of representatives of 27 countries who were supposed to decide today on agreeing to 100 million euros for farmers (approx. 40 million euros for Poland) has been canceled. ‘There will be no decision as long as Slovakia and Hungary continue to ban imports from Ukraine,'” she announced on Twitter Beata Płomecka.

This information is also provided by Katarzyna Szymańska-Borginion from RMF FM. “Until SK and HU withdraw from their unilateral import bans from the AU – there will be no money for Polish farmers either,” the journalist quotes.

EUR 100 million for farmers withheld, although it was close to an agreement

Last week it seemed that today a decision would be taken to transfer EUR 100 million from the EU crisis reserve to the five countries. As much as 40 percent of this amount was to go to Poland. The first signals that the payment is at risk appeared on May 9. The Brussels correspondent of the Polish Radio, Beata Płomecka, was the first to inform about it. Then the Commission confirmed that Slovakia and Hungary had not lifted the bans on imports from Ukraine.

These unilateral bans, which were also introduced by Poland and Bulgaria but withdrew from them, were to be replaced by an EU ban covering four products – wheat, corn, rapeseed and sunflower. It entered into force on May 2. These were the arrangements made with the European Commission. The second element of the agreement was a financial package for farmers for losses due to excessive imports from Ukraine. However, since Slovakia and Hungary did not comply with the arrangements made with the Commission, today’s meeting on this matter was canceled and thus the decision on the financial package was postponed.

The government has announced national support for farmers

Polish farmers are also to receive support from the Polish government, not only from the EU. Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development who were affected by the uncontrolled influx of cereals from Ukraine. These are the acts: on the Farmers’ Protection Fund, on the return of fuel excise duty and on the construction of silos up to 300 square meters.
