Gloria raises her blue jar by S/0.40 despite lowering the content

It has gone unnoticed, but the blue jar of Gloria milk, which most Peruvians consume daily, has risen in price by S/0.40 and its content has decreased. In other words, a 400 g jar that cost S/3.80 in wineries today contains 395 g and costs S/4.20.

According to the Peruvian Association of Consumers and Users (Aspec), this practice is known as reduflation, and it is quietly becoming more common in companies.

It consists of giving the consumer a smaller quantity of a product, but you are charged the same. This ‘decrease’ is reported on the packaging, but not in a prominent or relevant way,” he explained to La República. Chrysologist Cácerespresident of Aspec.

For his part, the lawyer specializing in consumer law Jaime Delgado specifies that users should be warned that not only has the product risen by S/0.40, but that it is more expensive “to the extent that they have reduced the quantity ”.

The lawyer points out that Indecopi should demand clarity from companies every time they take a measure of this type.

It is an issue that confuses consumersand in good time that it is being made public, because, of course, companies are free to sell their products [en la presentación que les parezca]; but in the market this has been standardized, users already have a residual memory of the product. There should be a mechanism for greater transparency in this regard,” says Delgado.

The company explained to this medium that it made this modification in line with the new local industry standard.

“We have made significant efforts in efficiency and productivity to cope with increases in the cost of raw materials internationally and in logistics processes, and thus minimize the impact of these fluctuations on our consumers,” the company explained to this medium.
He also added that the collection and production of milk It has been affected by the attack suffered by its plant in Arequipa and the climate crisis, which, due to the closure of roads due to mudslides, has impacted logistics, which translates into higher costs.

Controversy over the labeling of the blue jar

Gloria’s blue jar had to change its name from “whole evaporated milk” to “reconstituted milk” when the new milk regulation (DS 004) came into effect.

In December, the Association of Dairy Farmers of Peru (Agalep) filed a complaint with Indecopi stating that the labeling is misleading:

“Milk” is written in large letters, while “reconstituted” in a less conspicuous size.

From Glory They specified to this medium that they have not been notified of the complaint, but that they respect current regulations and that their labels have been prepared in strict compliance with them.
