321 days have passed since the formal request of Finland of accession to NATO. Not even a year later, the Alliance has given the ‘yes I want’ to the Nordic country. A process that, in other cases, has taken more than a decade and is now becoming fastest entry ever of the organization. Its general secretary, Jens Stoltenberg, has already described this event as “a historic day”.
A fact that will mark an era. According to Guillermo Pulido, an analyst at laSexta, the reactions from the Kremlin they are unpredictable. But, in the long term, this adherence can become dangerous. The reason? Because the Alliance today doubles its border with Russia. To the 1,300 kilometers it had, another 1,340 are added: in total, some 2,600km of direct border between NATO and Russia.
Before Moscow invaded Ukraine, Helsinki did not consider taking this step. But since the war became a reality, popular support for accession has skyrocketed among Finns. The citizens believe that it is a good step and that now they are safer. An opinion also shared by Stoltenberg, who believes that Finland is now safer, while NATO is stronger.
It is important to remember that in Finland they know what a war with Russia is. In 1939, the Russian attack known as the Winter War only ended when Finland ceded around 10% of its territory and it contained the second largest city in the country. Because of that fear, they are already building a wall on the border with Russia.
At the same time that Finland did, so did Swedenin a joint petition, applied to join NATO, but his candidacy is stalled for the moment due to Turkey’s veto.
Russia has already responded to this step at the head of NATO. Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu has assured that this “may pose a significant risk of expansion of the conflict.” The Kremlin has also announced that it will take countermeasures, although it maintains that it will not affect the outcome of the war in Ukraine.
