The nationalist politician Humza Yousaf has taken office this Wednesday as the new Prime Minister of Scotland, thus completing the process of renewing a Government forced to reinvent itself after the unexpected resignation of the previous leader, Nicola Sturgeon.
Yousaf, who this week was proclaimed leader of the Scottish National Party (SNP) and endorsed by the Scottish Parliament as Sturgeon’s successor, has completed the paperwork with a brief ceremony in which he has read a text and has sworn allegiance to the king, Carlos III.
The new minister must still form his cabinet, although already on Tuesday he announced Shona Robison as “number two”. Among his political objectives, he also made it clear that will work “tirelessly” to defend the independence of Scotland, a front in which it clashes head-on with London.
Yousaf, 37, is Scotland’s sixth prime minister.
