The European Union’s tourist tax scheme was supposed to be launched in November this year. However, it has been postponed to 2024. All travelers entering one of the countries of the zone who are not EU citizens will have to pay the fee.
Citizens of 63 countries, including the British, Americans and Australians, will have to pay the amount of EUR 7 each time. Only people under 18 and seniors over 70 will be exempt from the tourist tax on entering one of the countries of the Community.
Tourist tax elsewhere in the world
The program will follow the example of the US Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA), which allows citizens from 40 countries to stay in the US for 90 days without a visa.
In 2022, a tourist tax of 300 baht (about PLN 35) was introduced by Thailand. The governor of the Tourist Office announced that part of this fee will be spent on taking care of tourists. The taxes are also intended to help the government finance and maintain tourist attractions such as the Grand Palace in Bangkok.
In Europe, the tourist tax is already in force, e.g. in Paris, Vienna and Salzburg. Valencia and Venice are also planning to introduce it in the near future. The authorities collect a fee from people who buy accommodation in the city – in a hotel, hostel or apartment.
