The MWC brings together 88,500 attendees and approaches pre-pandemic editions

The Mobile World Congress (MWC), considered the largest in the world on mobile technologies, closed the 2023 edition this Thursday with figures close to the pre-pandemic, bringing together 88,500 people and generating an impact of more than 350 million euros, according to data from the GSMA, the organizing association. of the event.

These are records already close to those of the fairs prior to the outbreak of the COVID-19 crisis, when more than 100,000 people attended the editions between 2016 and 2019. In that last event before the appearance of COVID-19, 109,000 registered assistants.

The event brought together more than 2,400 exhibiting companies this year and the organizers emphasize that, beyond the final number of attendees, what is relevant is that more than half of the congressmen were management positions.

The show is still installed in the collective imagination under the name of Mobile, despite the fact that the mobile or cell phone is giving up more and more space and 56% of attendees in this edition are linked to technologies from other related industries.

The MWC, which is held annually in Barcelona, ​​opened on February 27 and hosted presentations and demonstrations of how technology and digitization are having a full impact on society and on all economic sectors, including the automotive industry.

5G, folding phones, improved cameras, fast device charging or artificial intelligence are some of the booming technological trends that could be seen in this edition of the MWC. Next year’s will be held again in Barcelona between February 26 and 29.

“EXCEEDED EXPECTATIONS”

“MWC Barcelona is back in full force. I am continually amazed and humbled by the sense of community, innovation, excitement and business generation.” The CEO of the GSMA, John Hoffman, celebrated the visible face of the event in a statement.

According to the balance of the GSMA, among the attendees there were 202 nationalities, the presentations exceeded a thousand and the accredited journalists were more than 2,400.

In addition, 196 delegations from more than 150 countries attended, some 70 ministers and more than a hundred heads of regulatory authorities.

THE TECHNOLOGY OF TOMORROW

Under the motto “Speed, unleashing tomorrow’s technology today”, this year’s MWC was organized around five thematic axes: 5G, extended reality, telecommunications, finance and digitization.

The Chinese Huawei is the one that occupied the largest area, and the first ten positions on this list were completed by Deutsche Telekom, Ericsson, Intel, Lenovo, Nokia, Qualcomm, Samsung, Telefónica and ZTE (listed in alphabetical order, not by occupied meters).

Entrepreneurs also played a prominent role, as more than 785 exhibiting companies filled the 4YFN emerging companies hall, which plans to expand its surface area next year.
