The economic situation has seriously worsened in Syria in the last three years and even before the recent tragedy, 90% of the population lived in poverty, amid high inflation accelerated by the war in Ukraine and the measures against Russia, the main Damascus ally.

“Countries affected by conflict are often at a significant disadvantage in terms of preparedness and ability to deal with emerging crises and natural disasters such as earthquakes, and Syria is no exception,” recalled the executive secretary of the ESCWA, Rola Dashti, according to the note.

Therefore, Dashti considered that it is time to implement solutions “innovative and long-term” that make it possible to achieve peacesustainable” in the nation, at war since shortly after the outbreak of popular revolts against Damascus in March 2011.

The initial earthquake registered on the other side of the Turkish border on February 6 and the aftershocks that followed, including a magnitude 6.4 yesterday, have affected about 9 million people in Syria in one way or another, according to with UN estimates cited by the commission.

According to the statement, the United Nations estimates that at least 6,000 people died as a result of the catastrophe in the Arab country, although different domestic and international sources offer disparate figures, partly because the affected areas are in the hands of rival actors.
