The IOC said that the resolution of the European Parliament contradicts the unifying mission of the Olympics
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) responded to the resolution of the European Parliament, which opposes the admission of Russian athletes to the 2024 Games in Paris. It is reported by TASS.
The IOC said the European Parliament resolution contradicts the autonomy of sports organizations and the unifying mission of the Olympic Games, which has been repeatedly approved by EU member states. They drew attention to the fact that the Olympic community has an obligation to comply with international human rights standards prohibiting discrimination.
The resolution of the European Parliament of February 18 says that 444 deputies condemned the IOC, 26 voted against, 37 abstained. Legislators called on the IOC to prevent Russians from competing.
The IOC is considering the possibility of admitting Russians to the 2024 Games in a neutral status, but there is no final decision on this issue. Competitions in Paris should be held from July 26 to August 11, 2024.
